The Great Migration Safari
6 days · Nairobi · Lake Nakuru · Maasai Mara
Itinerary
Airport pickup — your safari guide meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfers you to your hotel. Check in, freshen up and enjoy a full breakfast.
Safari briefing — your lead guide walks you through the full 6-day itinerary, explains the Great Migration phenomenon, what to expect at the Mara River crossings, and how to maximise your photography.
David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage — spend the afternoon with Kenya's famous rescued baby elephants at their public feeding and bathing hour. A warm and moving experience to open your safari.
Nairobi National Park — a short drive from the city takes you into the only national park adjoining a capital city in the world. Spot lions, giraffes, rhinos and zebras against the Nairobi skyline.
Welcome dinner — a relaxed dinner at your hotel with your guide to discuss migration patterns, animal behaviour and the wildlife you are most likely to encounter over the coming days.
Depart Nairobi after breakfast — head north-west through the Great Rift Valley, descending the dramatic escarpment with sweeping views across the valley floor below.
Arrive Lake Nakuru — check in at your lodge perched above the park with views over the lake. Grab binoculars and head straight out — the flamingo spectacle awaits.
Flamingo shoreline drive — hundreds of thousands of lesser and greater flamingos line the alkaline lake shore in a breathtaking sea of pink. Also spot pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles swooping over the water.
Rhino sanctuary game drive — Lake Nakuru is home to both black and white rhino, making it one of the best rhino-viewing destinations in East Africa. Also watch for lion, leopard, and Rothschild giraffe in the acacia forest.
Baboon Cliff viewpoint — end the day at Baboon Cliff, one of Kenya's most scenic overlooks, with a panoramic sunset view of the entire pink-fringed lake below.
Dinner at lodge — enjoy a candlelit dinner as the sounds of the African night fill the air around Lake Nakuru.
Dawn drive in Nakuru — one final early morning game drive in the park before checkout, a wonderful chance to catch rhinos active in the cool morning air.
Depart for the Mara — drive south-west toward the Maasai Mara, passing through rolling tea farms and Maasai homesteads. Excitement builds as you approach the reserve gate.
Arrive Maasai Mara — check in to your migration camp strategically positioned near the Mara River. After lunch, head straight out for your first migration game drive across the teeming Mara ecosystem.
First wildebeest sighting — vast columns of wildebeest and zebra stretch to the horizon. Your guide reads the herds' movement patterns and positions the vehicle for the best crossing viewpoints.
Mara River sundowner — watch hippos yawn and territorial battles unfold along the river as the sky turns crimson at dusk.
Migration briefing dinner — your guide explains the following day's river crossing strategy: which crossing points to prioritise, how to read herd behaviour, and what triggers a crossing event.
Depart camp at 5:30 AM — your guide positions the vehicle at the primary river crossing point before sunrise. Patience is everything — crossings happen on the herds' terms, not ours.
Herd build-up — thousands of wildebeest gather nervously at the riverbank, milling and agitating as the urge to cross battles their fear of the waiting crocodiles below. The tension is palpable and extraordinary.
The crossing — when the lead wildebeest finally commits and plunges in, tens of thousands follow in a thundering, splashing torrent. Nile crocodiles surge from the depths. Lions wait on the far bank. It is pure, raw, untamed Africa at its most dramatic.
Big Five game drive — after the crossing, fan out across the Mara Triangle tracking lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and cheetah. The migration brings predators to the Mara in extraordinary concentrations.
MiddayBush lunch — your camp team sets up a full picnic lunch on the open plains — a magical midday break surrounded by endless savannah.
Secondary crossing points — if a second crossing is anticipated, your guide repositions the vehicle. Crossings can happen multiple times in a single day at different points along the river.
Celebration bush dinner — back at camp, a special dinner under the stars to celebrate what you have witnessed — likely one of the most powerful wildlife experiences of your life.
Wake-up call at 4:30 AM — transfer by vehicle to the balloon launch site as the Mara is still dark and silent around you.
Hot air balloon launch — lift off at first light and drift silently above the Maasai Mara as the sun rises over the Tanzanian border. From above, the sheer scale of the wildebeest migration is breathtaking — dark rivers of animals stretching as far as the eye can see.
Champagne bush breakfast — after landing, your balloon pilot hosts a full silver-service champagne breakfast in the bush — one of Kenya's most iconic and romantic experiences.
Maasai village visit — spend an hour with a local Maasai community. Watch the traditional adumu jumping dance, try your hand at fire-starting, and browse handmade beadwork and jewellery crafted by village women.
Final game drive — a last afternoon across the Mara hunting for predator action — cheetah coalition hunts, leopard in the fig trees, and hyena clan activity around the river.
Final Mara sundowner — raise a glass on the open plains as the sun sets over the Mara for the last time on this safari.
Farewell bush dinner — a special final dinner at your camp with your guide, recounting the highlights of an extraordinary safari.
